They Were Dreamers

Brendan McMahon is a fugitive ... wanted in his native Ireland for accidentally killing a cruel landlord who showed no mercy to his tenant farmers. He flees during a turbulent period of Irish history when poor sharecroppers are starting to assert their political strength demanding freedom from their English masters.
By escaping to North America, McMahon believes he’ll be free of the kind of bondage that enslaves his fellow Irishmen... but he quickly finds that even in America he can neither escape his past nor avoid a future that includes subservience to heartless landlords and vicious land agents. Driven by an overwhelming sense of fairness, McMahon finds himself in trouble shortly after arriving in America.

Based on the novel They Were Dreamers by James F. Murphy Jr., the story is full of raw emotions and vivid moments that include thousands of ravenous mice swarming out of the woods devouring everything in sight, a fire that ravages Charlottetown and a near-disastrous rescue of diseased refugees escaping the Irish famine.
They Were Dreamers follows an incredible journey from 19th century Ireland to America and on to Canada’s east coast during a time of political unrest and bloodshed reflecting the little known story of the tenant revolt that led to Prince Edward Island’s refusal to join Confederation in 1867.
